[Prototype 2] product reviews

The sequel to Radical Entertainment's best-selling open-world game of 2009, PROTOTYPE 2 takes the unsurpassed carnage of the original PROTOTYPE and continues the experience of becoming the ultimate shape-shifting weapon.

As the game's all-new infected protagonist, Sgt. James Heller, players will cut a bloody swathe through the wastelands of post-viral New York Zero (or more simply...NYZ) with unparalleled locomotion, building up a vast genetic arsenal of deadly, biological weapons and abilities as they hunt, kill and consume their way toward the ultimate goal - to kill...Alex...Mercer!

This is one of those games that makes me think that movie writers are rather unexciting and lack creativity. The opening summary to this game is certainly an exciting idea; the idea of using biological weapons to create Super Soldiers certainly isn't a new idea (Captain America, The Hulk, Halo). Even though this is a common theme in console games, the combination of super soldiers and mutations opens up a whole new world of options.

The gameplay is very simple, and button mashing with only a limited number of attack options, but they are interchangeable and modifiable, which adds complexity. Some enemies can only be destroyed in certain ways, so often the changing of weapons/powers is necessary. The whole way in which the player upgrades is also exciting, with not only your players skills, but also his outward appearance changing when he levels up.

The maps in this game are very helpful, and will actual provide you with approximate locations of collectables that will lead to upgrades when sets are collected. There was definitely a point initially, where I first discovered the easy ways to gain skills, and I ended up overpowered, and the game was too easy. But as time went on, the maps gained difficulty, and on the final islands, you will be attacked anywhere, as the enemies come flooding from every angle.

I enjoyed this games mix of mission types; rooftop racing, hunting, espionage, and helicopter escorts. It had enough variety in game types, and gave you the freedom of choosing which missions to complete, as well as the option to explore the world at your leisure. The use of shapeshifting and mutations has really made this game a very enjoyable game.

I actually got this game when it was on special for well below the recommended retail price. So for me it was certainly amazing value.
